The Town of Lunenburg has offered an explanation for a series of power outages and flickering earlier this week. The First Peninsula/New Town outage was caused by the drastic drop in temperature overnight Sunday that caused a burnt wire in the infrastructure near the substation. A similar issue caused the outage on Victoria and Bridgewater Roads. The flickering power on Monday and Tuesday was caused by the cold load which officials explain are hard to fix because after an extended outage the synchronized restarting of devices like heating and motors creates demand well above normal which causes an overload and triggering of proactive relays. In a statement the town says it has approved $15 million in upgrades to ensure reliable service to all electric utility customers.
